John Tilling

John has always had a hands on object making background, having a creative spirit that transfers into artworks, designs and artefacts. His humble beginnings in the carpentry and joinery field eventually led to the film and television industry art department, providing the challenges and the opportunities to turn fantasy into reality, through props design and manufacturing to set dressing. Next was the journey into commercial interiors designing and building Wild West theme bars both in New Zealand and Australia including some of the graphic design. It’s not too surprising that he ventured into product design.

“I have always passionately loved creating things, I believe fantasy, creativity, and the endless increments of self improvement, are the main drivers which allow the individual, and humankind to grow. Most artefacts begin from an idea, observation or just a simple dream, that with the addition of good design can benefit and improve our way of life and the future.”

This ride on toy concept design is a current ongoing project to extend the use and life of the product from 2 – 6 year old, by adding a number of adjustable elements. It also aims to give the child some added education with a range of clip on mechanical and interactive units that are powered by the tricycle when in motion.

This project is an entrant into the SHAC09 Sustainable Habitat Challenge and comes in a half round and quarter round version. It looks at regaining the lost ground area that a building occupies with a low cost product that can help give back lost vegetation as close to  “metre for metre” ratio as possible by using the offending architecture.
It also has the added bonus of water conservation when used with an additional controlled pump when arranged vertically, re-circulating back the excess water that is normally lost on the ground. It is ideal for limited garden spaces and under cover areas and can fit to more situations on the building than other planters on the market including posts and drain pipes, internal/ external corners and flat walls.

Gobo candle light copyThis fun product design had a New Zealand theme for an overseas market generally souvenir gift ware. The concept looked at the decorative pictorial imagery of New Zealand’s multicultural population, with a projected image to capture the experience of the dappled sunlight that filters through the native forest canopy when on a bush walk. The bases draw inspiration from the waves and landscape found throughout New Zealand.
